You’ve probably heard the news by now, but Disney has officially announced its new streaming service that will replace the now-defunct Netflix in the United States starting next year. If you don’t know about it yet, here’s what you need to know about DisneyPlus so far before you start signing up for your account with them.
Last year, Disney made a splash in digital streaming when it announced its plans for a new standalone service. After much anticipation, we now know that DisneyPlus.Com Login/Begin will be a direct competitor to Netflix and other streaming services. The platform will feature a number of exclusive shows and movies from brands you love including Marvel and Star Wars. Like Netflix, you’ll have access to older television series and movies, although right now that library is more limited than Netflix’s original content. While details are still sparse on everything that will be included on the platform (that changes every day), here’s what we know so far about Disney Plus.
We don’t have a specific release date yet, but we do know that it will be sometime in late 2019. It’s still a bit early, though—so many of those details are still being figured out. We know it will cost $6.99 a month and have thousands of episodes from your favorite shows and movies from brands like Pixar, Marvel Studios, Star Wars, and more. In terms of genre, expect something pretty similar to what you see on Netflix now—plus shows you can only find on Disney+. Be sure to stay tuned for updates about exactly when it will launch!
If you’re a long-time user of Netflix, Hulu, or any other subscription streaming service, there’s nothing you need to do before September. Your current subscription will still work just fine on your device and at your current rate for some time. If you haven’t used these services in awhile but are planning on streaming with Disney Plus when it comes out later in 2019, go ahead and create an account—it’s free! Once September rolls around and you log into your new service with all of your favorites saved, everything should transfer automatically.
Both plans cost $6.99 per month (with limited ads), but will be free for subscribers of Apple Music, Hulu, or Netflix. It’s unclear whether any special offers are being made available at launch. If you have a TV service subscription, it’ll likely carry over with your account. The app will be available on Android devices in 2020 and will be supported by dedicated hardware from Roku, Sony, Samsung, LG Electronics Inc., and Vizio Inc. Apple has not released any official product announcements about Disney Plus yet, but rumors about an Apple TV Plus are making rounds online suggesting that there might be separate hardware to stream content from different services using just one device. This would allow viewers access to content from all their favorite apps without having to sign up separately for each of them.

The overall price of a subscription will be $6.99. Currently, that’s roughly what Netflix costs for streaming on one device at a time in HD quality. In comparison, Hulu’s premium package is $7.99 monthly with ads and HBO Now costs $14.99 monthly without ads. One thing to keep in mind is that Disney Plus won’t have any ads on its family-friendly content, so you don’t have to worry about noisy commercials while your kids are watching their favorite characters from Frozen or The Lion King on repeat for days on end.

Netflix earned an estimated $6 billion in 2018 alone. The company is projecting another $8 billion in 2019 revenue, with substantial increases expected to continue every year until 2028, when revenues are predicted to reach nearly $20 billion.
